Where to Stay in Mykonos

Town nightlife, family beaches or quiet inland value — pick your pace.

Mykonos is small, but the difference between areas is large. Chora puts you in the middle of the nightlife; the south-coast beaches are calmer and more scenic; inland villages cost a fraction of both. Transport is the deciding factor — taxis are famously scarce in high season.

Best Areas to Stay

What each area feels like, and who it suits best.

Mykonos Town (Chora)

Whitewashed lanes, restaurants, bars and the old port, all walkable. Wonderful by day and very lively at night.

Best for: Nightlife and travellers without a vehicle

Ornos & Platis Gialos

Sheltered sandy bays with shallow water, beach tavernas and regular buses. The most practical family bases.

Best for: Families and easy beach days

Psarou & Agios Ioannis

Chic, protected coves with high-end hotels, beach clubs and sunset views towards Delos.

Best for: Luxury stays and couples

Paradise & Paraga

The island's party beaches, with clubs running from afternoon into the night, plus hostels and simpler rooms.

Best for: Younger travellers and groups

Ano Mera

The inland village, with a monastery, everyday tavernas and much lower prices.

Best for: Budget-conscious visitors with a car

Types of Accommodation

Boutique hotels

Small, design-led properties, mostly in and around Chora and the south-coast bays.

Beach resorts

Larger hotels with pools and direct beach access at Ornos, Platis Gialos and Kalafatis.

Private villas

Popular for groups, usually with a pool and sea view — a car is essential.

Apartments & studios

The most affordable option, best inland or slightly back from the beach.

Tips for Choosing

  1. 1

Check the bus route before booking. Without a vehicle, being on a line makes the island far cheaper to enjoy.

  2. 2

Wind is a real factor. North-facing beaches can be blustery, while the south coast is usually sheltered.

  3. 3

Staying in Chora means noise until late; ask about the street if you're a light sleeper.

  4. 4

Prices in August can be several times May or October rates for the same room.

Practical Advice

Location vs price

Ano Mera and the northern coast are dramatically cheaper than Psarou or Chora for similar-quality rooms.

Quiet vs central

Chora, Paradise and Paraga are the loudest. Agios Ioannis, Kalafatis and Ano Mera are the calmest.

Getting around

Buses are good in summer, ATVs are popular, and pre-booked transfers beat waiting for scarce taxis.

Arrivals

Both the airport and the new port are close to Chora, so transfers are short wherever you stay.
