In the south of Peloponnese, near Sparta, an organic farm is being transformed into a food forest
Breaking all clichés, this farm is run by a young female entrepreneur who re-immigrated to Greece seven years ago to take over her father's business, while discovering her true roots.
The farm started as one of Greece's first organic farms back in 1985. Soon it evolved into an exporting business founded by her father — pioneer Stavros Darmos — to support other organic farmers too. It is now in its transition to a food forest, managed by implementing techniques of permaculture and natural farming.
The young female farmer and her cousin want to transform this piece of land into a rich food forest
The huge variety of fruit trees and shrubs adjusted to Greece's climate create a resilient eco-system where no human intervention is necessary for maintaining its functioning — like a forest doesn't need humans.
But the interesting story continues as an eco-project. The Southern Lights project is evolving on this piece of land, living from what the food forest provides and learning from observing it. A big variety of workshops on sustainable living practices are hosted here, with teachers coming from all over the world.
The project aims to create a hub for like-minded people while providing practical solutions for sustainable farming and living practices.
