Sites, museums and the stories behind them
Ancient sites are mostly foundations and fragments; a good guide is what turns them back into a city, a sanctuary or a theatre. If you only book one guided experience in Greece, make it a site you already planned to visit anyway.
What to look for
Acropolis and Acropolis Museum
The single best pairing in Athens — the site in the early morning, the museum afterwards to see the sculpture up close.
Delphi
The ancient oracle on the slopes of Parnassus, with a superb small museum and a setting that does half the work.
Knossos and Heraklion
The Minoan palace plus the archaeological museum, which holds the finds that explain it.
Delos, Olympia and Epidaurus
Quieter, larger and often more atmospheric than the headline sites, especially outside peak hours.
Where it works best
Athens
The Acropolis, Ancient Agora, Kerameikos and the National Archaeological Museum.
Delphi
A long half-day from Athens, best combined with lunch in Arachova.
Peloponnese
Mycenae, Epidaurus, Nemea and Olympia across two or three days.
Crete & Delos
Minoan Knossos and Phaistos; Delos as a half-day sail from Mykonos.
Good to know
- Licensed guides in Greece are formally trained; it is worth confirming your guide is one.
- Book the first entry slot in summer — by midday the Acropolis rock offers almost no shade.
- Combined tickets exist for several Athens sites and are cheaper than paying at each gate.
- Museums are often better in the afternoon heat, when the outdoor sites are at their hardest.
