The Portara, the ancient marble gateway on Naxos

A mid-October 2026 guide to the Greek islands that stay open and worth visiting: Crete, Santorini, Rhodes, Naxos and which smaller islands to be careful with late in the month.

I am writing this from Greece in mid-October 2026. This is the point in the year when the island question changes. In summer it is "which island is the nicest?" Now it is "which island is still properly open when I get there?" The answer matters more than how famous an island is. A big, lived-in island in late October usually beats a tiny postcard island where half the tavernas have shut.

This guide covers which islands still work well, which ones to be careful with, and how to pair one with Athens for an easy autumn trip.

A note on numbers: temperatures and opening patterns below are typical for October, not live data. Always check your hotel's season dates and the ferry operator's site for your exact days.

Early October vs late October on the islands

Early October (1–15)Late October (16–31)
SeaUsually warm enough for most peopleCooler; best in the south
Hotels and tavernasMostly openMany seasonal places close, especially on small islands
FerriesClose to the summer pattern on main routesFewer sailings on some routes; wind delays possible
CrowdsCalm but aliveVery quiet outside towns
Best choiceAlmost any well-known islandCrete, Rhodes, Santorini, larger islands

The short version: in the first half of the month you can choose almost freely. In the second half, choose an island where people live all year.

Best islands for October

Crete: the longest season

Crete is my first answer for October, especially late October. It is a big island with real towns, an airport at both Heraklion and Chania, and a local life that does not stop when tourists leave. Chania's old harbour, the Rethymno old town and the archaeological sites stay open and are far nicer without the summer heat.

The south coast often has beach weather well into the month. Hiking is also much better than in summer. The downside is size: Crete is not a place to see in three days. Pick one region, for example Chania and the west, and stay there.

Santorini: still good for views, calmer days

Santorini in October is about the caldera, the villages and the sunset, not the beaches. Those do not close for winter. Cruise traffic usually thins as autumn goes on, so the middle of the day in Fira and Oia gets calmer, though some ships still call.

A sunset sail is still the best thing to book here, as long as the weather allows. Our Santorini boat tours guide compares the options. For a base, read where to stay in Santorini and the Santorini destination guide.

Be aware that by the last week of October some cliffside hotels and restaurants close. Confirm your hotel is open before you pay, and expect evenings to get cool and windy.

Rhodes: warm and well connected

Rhodes is one of the warmest popular islands in October and has a long season. The medieval Old Town is a real town, not a summer set, and Lindos is far more pleasant without August heat. It also has a busy airport, which matters when ferries get less frequent. A good choice if you want beaches later in the month.

Naxos: the quieter suggestion

If you want a calmer Cyclades island in early October, Naxos is the one I would pick. It is big enough to have a real town and farming villages, the beaches on the west coast are long and sandy, and the food is good. Paros is a similar option. By the end of October both become very sleepy, so they are best in the first half of the month.

Islands to be careful with in late October

  • Small Cyclades islands such as the little ones you can only reach by ferry. They are beautiful, but many depend fully on summer visitors. Late in the month you may find few open places to eat and fewer boats.
  • Mykonos. It winds down quickly after mid-October. Beach clubs and many bars close. If nightlife is the reason you are going, go earlier in the season.
  • Islands with only one weekly or reduced connection. A cancelled sailing in windy weather can cost you a day or two. Do not plan one the day before your flight home.

None of these are bad places. They are just a poor fit for a first trip in late October.

How to combine with Athens

For most October trips, the simplest plan is Athens plus one island:

  • 7 days: 3 nights in Athens, 4 nights on Santorini or Crete.
  • 10 days: 3 nights in Athens, 7 nights on Crete split between two bases, or Santorini plus Naxos in early October.

Start with Athens if you arrive late or tired. October is a great month for the city: the Athens destination guide helps you choose a neighbourhood, and an early Acropolis tour beats the queues.

Flying is often simpler than the ferry in late October, especially to Crete and Rhodes. For more on routes and timing, see our Greek island hopping guide. It is honest about how many days ferries really take.

What to book first

  1. Where to stay. In late October, check your hotel is open for your exact dates. This is the main thing that goes wrong.
  2. Ferries or flights. Book after your room. Check the operator for the current schedule rather than trusting old timetables online.
  3. Transfers. Quiet ports and airports have fewer taxis waiting, and it gets dark earlier. A pre-booked ride from Athens airport or the port of Piraeus removes stress. See private transfers.
  4. One activity. In Santorini, the sunset sail. In Athens, the Acropolis. Everything else can be decided on the spot.

Final recommendation

If you are travelling in early October, you can still pick almost any well-known island. Naxos, Santorini and Crete are all excellent. If you are travelling in the second half, pick Crete or Rhodes for the most open places, or Santorini if views matter more than beaches. Pair it with a few days in Athens and keep a buffer day before you fly home.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which Greek island is best in late October?

Crete is the safest choice. It is big and lived-in all year, so plenty of hotels, tavernas and sites stay open, and the south coast often keeps beach weather longest. Rhodes is a good second choice.

Is Santorini worth visiting in October 2026?

Yes, if you go for the views, the villages and a boat trip rather than beaches. It gets calmer through the month. In the last week some hotels and restaurants close, so check that yours is open for your dates.

Can I still island hop in October?

Yes in the first half of the month, with two islands at most for a week-long trip. Later in October some routes run less often and wind can delay boats, so keep a spare day before any flight home.

Is the sea warm enough to swim on the islands?

Usually yes in early October, especially in the south: Crete, Rhodes and the southern Cyclades. It cools through the month. Late October swims are fine for some people and too cold for others.

Which islands should I avoid in late October?

Avoid small islands that depend fully on summer tourism, such as the smaller Cyclades, if you want open restaurants and frequent ferries. Mykonos also winds down fast after mid-month. They are not bad, just very quiet and partly closed.
