An honest mid-October 2026 guide to Greece: typical weather in Athens, the Cyclades, Crete and the north, early vs late October, where to go and what is still worth booking ahead.
I am writing this from Greece in mid-October 2026, and this is honestly one of my favourite times of year here. The heat has broken, the queues have shortened and locals are back on the café terraces. You can still swim, especially early in the month, but October is really a month for walking, history and long lunches rather than beach clubs. Here is what to expect and what to book.
A note on numbers: the temperatures and sunset times below are typical October ranges, not live readings. Always check a forecast for your exact dates.
October weather in Greece
- Athens: typically warm days in the low-to-mid 20s °C, cooler evenings, and the first autumn rain showers are possible, usually short.
- Cyclades (Santorini, Naxos, Paros, Mykonos): pleasant days, often in the low 20s °C, but windy days are common and evenings get cool by late October. Bring a light jacket.
- Crete: usually the warmest of the popular destinations, with beach weather lasting well into the month in the south.
- Northern Greece (Thessaloniki, Halkidiki, Meteora): noticeably cooler, more rain and chilly mornings. Great for cities, food and monasteries, less so for beaches after the first week.
Early October vs late October
| Early October (1–15) | Late October (16–31) | |
|---|---|---|
| Feel | Late summer | Real autumn |
| Sea | Swimmable for most people | Cooler; fine for the hardy, best in the south |
| Crowds | Moderate | Quiet outside cities |
| Prices | Starting to ease | Often noticeably lower |
| Island services | Mostly open | Some hotels, beach bars and routes wind down |
| Best for | Islands plus Athens | Athens, Crete, mainland, history |
If beaches matter, travel in the first half. If you mostly want sights, food and calm, late October is excellent value.
Best places to go in October
Athens. October is close to perfect for the city. Walking between the Acropolis, Plaka and the museums is comfortable rather than exhausting. Our Athens destination guide and where to stay in Athens help you pick a base, and day trips from Athens to Delphi or Cape Sounion are far nicer without summer heat.
Crete. The safest island choice for late October. It is big, has a long season and enough open hotels, tavernas and sites to stay lively.
Santorini. Still busy early in the month, quieter later. The views do not close for winter, and boat trips run while the weather allows. Read where to stay in Santorini and the Santorini destination guide before you choose a village.
Quieter Cyclades. Naxos and Paros are lovely in early October: open villages, warm sea, far fewer people. By the end of the month they become very sleepy.
The mainland. The Peloponnese, Delphi, Meteora and Nafplio are at their best for sightseeing and driving.
What is better in October
- Sightseeing. Ancient sites are cooler and less crowded, especially in the morning.
- Food. Autumn produce, new olive oil season approaching, and tavernas that cater to locals again. A food tour or cooking class in Athens is a great October afternoon.
- Prices. Many hotels drop rates after the September peak, particularly from mid-month.
- Fewer cruise-ship days. Cruise traffic usually thins through autumn, so Santorini and Mykonos feel less packed in the middle of the day, though some ships still call.
Athens: Acropolis and Mythology Highlights Small Group Tour
October is the most comfortable month of the year for the Acropolis: cooler mornings, softer light and far shorter queues than summer.
Athens: Original Athens Food Tour (Full Meal Experience)
Markets, bakeries, meze and a sit-down taverna meal, with ouzo and coffee along the way. October's milder weather makes a four-hour food walk easy going.
Santorini: Catamaran Tour with BBQ Dinner, Drinks, and Music
The classic caldera sail ending off Oia. Sunset is earlier in October (roughly 18:30 early in the month, closer to 18:00 later), so check the departure time.
What gets worse
- Shorter days. Sunset moves from roughly 18:30 to around 18:00 or earlier through the month, and clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, so evenings get dark much sooner.
- Beach-club and hotel closures. Many seasonal places close from the third week, especially on Mykonos and small islands.
- Fewer ferries late in the month. Some island routes reduce frequency or stop for the winter, and wind can still cause delays. Check operators before booking, and see our island hopping guide for realistic routes.
- Weather variability. A rainy or windy day or two is normal. Keep plans flexible.
What to book first
- Accommodation. In late October confirm your hotel is actually open for your dates.
- Ferries or flights. Book once lodging is set; on reduced late-season routes, flying can be simpler.
- Airport and port transfers. With fewer taxis at quiet ports and earlier dark evenings, a pre-booked ride saves stress. See private transfers.
- One or two tours. An early Acropolis tour and, in Santorini, a sunset sail. Everything else can wait.
Final recommendation
If you can choose, go in the first half of October for the best balance of warm sea and calm. Go in the second half if you care more about Athens, Crete and the mainland than beaches, and want lower prices. Either way, base yourself in fewer places and leave room for slow lunches.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is October a good time to visit Greece in 2026?
Yes, for most travellers. It is warm rather than hot, the big summer crowds are gone and prices start to drop. It is best for cities, history, food and walking. If your priority is beach clubs and nightlife, aim for the first week or choose September instead.
Is the sea warm enough to swim in October?
In the first half of October the sea is usually still comfortable for most people, typically around the low-to-mid 20s °C in the south. It cools through the month, and the north cools sooner. Crete, Rhodes and the southern Cyclades hold their warmth longest.
Which islands are best in October?
Crete and Rhodes stay lively longest, with the most open hotels and restaurants. Santorini works well for views and boat trips. Naxos and Paros are good quieter options early in the month. Very small islands can feel half-closed by late October.
Do beach clubs and hotels stay open?
Many stay open through mid-October, but a growing number close from around the third week, especially on Mykonos and smaller islands. Cities and Crete are barely affected. Check your hotel's season dates before booking for late October.
Do I still need to book tours ahead?
Less than in summer, but it is still worth booking popular things a few days ahead: an early Acropolis slot, a Santorini sunset sail and any small-group food tour. Weekends and the 28 October public holiday can still fill up.
