September is the month many Greeks would choose for their own holiday. The heat softens, the sea is at its warmest, families have gone home and the islands start to breathe again. But "September" is not one thing. The first week still behaves like August, while the last week can feel like the start of the off-season on smaller islands.

September weather: Athens vs islands vs the north

- Crete and Rhodes: the warmest options, often 27–30°C with sea around 24–25°C. They hold summer weather the longest.

Athens
September is one of the best months for Athens. It is hot enough to swim at the Athens Riviera but not so hot that sightseeing becomes miserable. Santorini
Santorini is at its best in September: warm sea, softer light and fewer cruise-ship peaks than in August, although it is never truly quiet. Crete
Crete is the safest bet for the whole month and into October. Beaches like Elafonisi and Balos are far more comfortable than in August, and the gorge walks become realistic again as the heat drops.
Quieter Cyclades
Naxos, Paros, Milos, Sifnos and Folegandros are superb in the first three weeks. By the last days of the month, smaller islands have fewer ferry connections and some tavernas and hotels close for the season, so check dates carefully if you travel after 25 September.
The mainland

- Beach-club energy: Mykonos and Ios party scenes wind down after mid-September. If nightlife is your priority, go early in the month.
- Some closures: a few hotels, beach bars and seasonal restaurants close from late September, particularly on quieter islands.
- Wind and storms: a windy spell or a short storm can cancel boat trips for a day. Keep a spare day in your plan.
What to book before you go
- Ferries: book popular routes a week or two ahead in early September; later in the month you can often book a few days before.
