Adventure
Gorge hikes, ancient trails, sailing and off-season Greece.
There is a whole other Greece behind the beach: gorges that take a full day to walk, mountain villages with no tour buses, sea caves reachable only by kayak, and shoulder-season weather that is far better for all of it than August.
Who this is perfect for
- Walkers, kayakers, divers and sailors
- Travellers who prefer May, June, September or October
- Anyone looking for the quieter, less-visited parts of the country
Recommended destinations

Crete
Samaria and a dozen lesser gorges, the White Mountains, and remote south-coast villages reached on foot or by boat.

Rhodes
Inland trails, quiet east-coast bays and reliable wind for watersports.
Athens
A surprisingly good base: Parnitha and Hymettus trails, plus day trips to Delphi and the Peloponnese.
Experiences worth planning around
A full-day gorge walk
Start early, carry more water than you think, and plan for a boat or bus back.
Sailing or kayaking a coastline
Paxos and Kefalonia's sea caves are best seen from the water, at your own pace.
Ancient trails and mountain villages
Walking between villages in the Peloponnese or Zagori is Greece at its most rewarding.
Where to stay
- Small guesthouses in mountain or inland villages cost little and put you at the trailhead.
- A rental car is usually essential — plan stays with parking in mind.
- In shoulder season check that your accommodation is actually open; many island properties close in winter.
Practical tips
- 1
Avoid strenuous hiking in July and August; heat, not distance, is the limiting factor.
- 2
Trails are often marked but rarely maintained — download offline maps before setting out.
- 3
Wild camping is restricted in Greece; read the rules before planning a trip around it.
