Island Hopping

Build a route through the Cyclades, Ionian or Dodecanese.

Island hopping is the most rewarding way to see Greece — and the easiest to overplan. Stay within one island group, allow at least three nights per island, and let the ferry timetable shape the route rather than the other way round.

Who this is perfect for

  • Travellers with 10 days or more and a flexible itinerary
  • Repeat visitors who want to go beyond the famous names
  • Anyone happy to travel light and change beds a few times

Experiences worth planning around

A three-island Cyclades route

Athens → Naxos → Paros → Santorini is the classic: varied, well connected and doable in ten days.

An Ionian loop

Corfu, Paxos and Kefalonia — greener, cooler and much quieter than the Aegean in August.

A day sail between islands

Small boats reach coves and islets the ferries never touch.

Where to stay

  • Stay near the port on arrival and departure nights — early ferries are far less painful that way.
  • Book the first and last island ahead in summer; the middle of the route can stay flexible.
  • Look for places that offer luggage storage: ferries often leave hours after checkout.

Practical tips

  1. 1

Never connect a ferry to a same-day flight — weather cancellations happen, especially with the August meltemi wind.

  2. 2

Fast catamarans cost more and cancel more often in wind; conventional ferries are slower but steadier.

  3. 3

Buy tickets in advance for July and August; outside those months a day or two ahead is usually fine.
